About Miles

I started working with clay during art foundation at Stafford college in 1988. We were taught basic throwing and mostly hand building in a sculptural way to support our fine art and figurative work.

A move to London followed a BA in art and design at Bradford, where I studied fine art and textiles. I worked at a costume house and began to learn about design and styling clothes.  That led to a career in the film industry, which was exciting and taught me a lot, but wasn’t where I was meant to be.

I applied for the MA menswear course at St Martins, where I realised that workwear was more interesting than fashion. Luckily my first job after that was with Levi Strauss, who had just opened a design studio in Soho.

Fourteen years of denim led to Patagonia in California and total immersion in the ecology of clothing and, coincidentally a rediscovery of pottery by way of a small studio and an excellent teacher in Ojai.

Since returning to England, clay has become an obsession, eclipsing all, completing the circle home to Staffordshire.
